On duty police officer commits suicide at headquarters www.privateofficer.com

BRENTWOOD, Tenn. (Nashville TN. metro) March 19 2008 --

Authorities in this bedroom community just south of Nashville say that they made a sad and starteling discovery Sunday just outside their doors. An officer who laid dead inside a police cruiser and now police believe that the Brentwood officer who was found dead of a gunshot wound in his cruiser committed suicide.
Larry Campbell, a 25-year veteran of this mid-sized department, was found in the parking lot of the department's headquarters on Sunday night.
City Manager Mike Walker told The Tennessean that a six-page suicide note was found.
Campbell was married with two children. He handled traffic enforcement and accident reconstruction and had been an instructor at the Tennessee Law Enforcement Training Committee.
Sunday marked his 25th anniversary with the department.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete as the department and this community stand in shock.

Police officer suicide is a frequent way of death nationwide and few have broken through the blue wall to determine the exact underlying reason.

The job takes a toll on you (Ret.)Major Mike Matthews told me. It's something that will eat at you. All of the things that you see out on the street in a few short years most people will never see or experience their life time.

The fact that the officer chose the department parking lot says a lot adds Chaplain Murphy, a long time police and fire chaplain. He was sending a message. A strong message and I've seen that in other officer suicides.

No one except the Brentwood Police Department knows what was in the lengthy suicide note but he had a lot to say to someone and he wanted to be heard and maybe felt that for once and for all, this was the way that he would be Matthews said. It's a sad ending to such a long dedicated career with the city and for the citizens of the community to loose a faithful public servant, it's really devastating, sad and a loss for all, Chaplain Murphy added.

God rest his soul the Chaplain said, his head hanging low as he stared at the ground in a moment of silence.
