Anderson SC. March 19 2008 — Five teenage girls found themselves behind bars on Saturday and Monday in Anderson after making attempts in three unrelated incidents to remove merchandise from stores without paying.
All five girls were arrested and charged with shoplifting.
Four were charged on Monday and taken to the Anderson City Jail. The other was arrested Saturday and taken to the Anderson County Detention Center.
An 18-year-old woman of Anderson was arrested about 6:45 p.m. Saturday after failing to force her way past store employees with 12 pieces of jewelry, valued at $67, from Rue 21 on Station Drive in Anderson, according to the Anderson County Sheriff's Office.
The woman also was charged with three counts of assault and battery after pushing one employee into a metal bar, hitting another in her face and pulling hair and leaving a bald spot in another employee's head, according to the incident report.
She is being held at the Anderson County Detention Center.
Tuesday, a 19-year-old and a 17-year-old female, both of Abbeville were each ordered to pay fines of $1,087.50 or spend 30 days in the Anderson City Jail. after pleading guilty in Anderson Municipal Court to shoplifting. The women admitted to stealing $131 worth of baby clothes Monday from Sears at the Anderson Mall.
Also of Tuesday in the city court, an 18-year-old Belton woman and a 17-year-old Pendleton woman asked for pre-trial intervention after admitting to stealing $74 worth of clothing on Monday from Hamrick's on Main Street in Anderson.
Anderson police made two arrests at 2:30 p.m. Monday at Hamrick's and two other arrests at 4 p.m. Monday at the mall, according to the incident reports.
Judge Ken Mattison allowed the Belton woman and the Pendleton woman to each sign bonds in the amount of $1,087.50 to that they could enroll in the intervention program. A trial date of May 2 was set in the event the teens fail to complete the program.
But Judge Mattison told the Abbeville women to serve their time or pay their entire fine, since each teen has previously enrolled in pre-trial intervention.
