Man faces robbery charges in theft of potato chips by; Rick McCann www.privateofficer.com

WORCESTER MA. March 22 2008— When you're facing a snack attack and you just gotta have those greasy, salty potato chips, make sure you have the money to pay for them or find yourself in the same situation that a 19-year-old Charlton man who now faces robbery and assault charges does.

He was in court yesterday after he allegedly stole a bag of potato chips at a CVS store at 110 Front St in the city of Worcester Mass.

When he tried to walk out without paying, the 6-foot-2-inch, 230-pound man was confronted by a diminutive female store manager who blocked his path and demanded payment. According to police records, that's when he alledgedly shoved her out of the way and injured her, police said. As a result, other store employees and police officers took special interest in finding the suspect. Police soon scoured the area and found Jack M. Salisbury of 19 Robert Blvd., Charlton, who was identified as the chip thief and is now charged with unarmed robbery and assault and battery, according to Sgt. Kerry F. Hazelhurst, Police Department spokesman

Police said the store manager saw him take the chips and when he started to leave she asked, “Are you going to pay for those?” He replied, “These are mine,” and attempted to leave.

The store employee then stood in his path. The unidentified store manager already had a bad back, which was further aggravated when she was shoved aside by the alleged shoplifter, Sgt. Hazelhurt said.

Other store employees followed Mr. Salisbury while investigating officers gathered information and broadcast his description.

He was soon spotted on Main Street, near the Salvation Army building, by Officer Jeffrey P. Carlson of the Community Impact Division, who placed Mr. Salisbury under arrest and transported him to the city jail.

It's not known if Salisbury has posted bound yet or if he has an attorney.
