Fleeing shoplifter hits wheelchair bound employee www.privateofficer.com

Pittsburg PA. March 19 2008
Police are investigating a retail theft that they say ended with a wheelchair-bound employee being hit by the car of the fleeing suspect.
The incident happened Thursday at about 3 p.m. at the Giant Eagle in the Allegheny Towne Center.
Police said a man walked out of the store without paying for a shopping cart full of groceries.
Police say an employee saw the man walk out and followed him. The employee asked the man why he didn't pay for the items, and the man said he would return to the store and to do so.
However, police said, the man continued to load the items into his car.
Police said he backed up his red Kia and hit the employee in the wheelchair.
"The employee wasn't seriously hurt, but he was jostled around," said Chief John Fontaine.
Police said they have the surveillance tape showing the incident.
Police have released a description of a suspected shoplifter involved in a hit-and-run accident during his escape.
The suspect is believed to be 25 to 40 years old, and of medium build and height.
He was wearing a dark maroon, hooded sweatshirt, baseball cap, jeans and brown boots.
He was driving a red, four-door Kia brand car.
Anyone who saw the incident or who has information is asked to call township police at 724-845-9410.
