Violent crime spree ends with arrest of 4 teens www.privateofficer.com

Menlo Park Ca March 22 2008
Four young men accused of robbing a Safeway in Menlo Park, attacking the store security guard, then robbing and seriously injuring two bystanders are heading to trial, following a Superior Court judge's decision Wednesday that enough evidence exists to charge the suspects with multiple felony counts.

Prosecutors say four 18-year-old East Palo Alto residents - John Mahe, Holomesi Tuineau, Malakai Mataele and Tony Vailala - began their crime spree on Feb. 24 with an early-morning attempt to steal alcohol from the supermarket on El Camino Real.

The four men had sent a 14-year-old juvenile into the Safeway to steal alcohol for the group, but the theft took a violent turn when a store security guard spotted the juvenile and chased him out of the store, prosecutors said.

The suspects confronted the security guard in the parking lot and attacked him, stealing the alcohol and turning their attention to new victims, prosecutors said.

They robbed and assaulted a 63-year-old man out for a morning walk, administering a beating which left the senior with a blood clot in his brain and fractures to his nose, eye socket and jaw, prosecutors said.

The victim was subsequently hospitalized. The teenagers also robbed and assaulted a 37-year-old man in the vicinity, causing multiple facial lacerations which also required hospitalization, prosecutors said. "It's a horribly vicious crime, and it is not excessive to say this was an attack by a pack of animals," Chief Deputy District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said. "This is no different than some wild animals on the hunt for prey, and they found it in these victims. "It is incredibly offensive conduct - it is you or me walking down that street," he added. "The victims were simply there at the wrong place and time." Mahe and Tuineau face six felony charges - including three counts of robbery, two counts of assault, one count of commercial burglary and a special allegation of inflicting great bodily injury. Vailala faces those six counts, minus the special allegation, while Mataele faces only two felony charges: commercial burglary and robbery.

The 14-year-old juvenile is being prosecuted through the county's juvenile justice program. The suspects face a maximum penalty of between five and 12 years in prison. Mahe, Tuineau and Mataele are being held in the county jail in lieu of $200,000. Vailala is being held in lieu of $50,000.

A Superior Court arraignment is scheduled for April 3.
