Syracuse, NY March 24 2008 -- A shoplifting suspect who said he had AIDS tried to stab a store security officer with a hypodermic needle, Syracuse police said.
The security officer may have been punctured by the needle while handcuffing the man and has been tested for HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, police said.
Francisco Flores, 38, of Fitch Street, tried to steal a shopping cart full of meat products and other groceries worth $388 from the Price Chopper Supermarket about 3 p.m. Friday, police said.
Flores pushed the cart away and ran when the store's loss prevention officer, Ryan Eiffe, 25, confronted him in the parking lot, police said. Eiffe and store manager Frank Bowman then chased Flores to the median between Seeley Road and Erie Boulevard East, police said.
Flores pulled out an uncapped hypodermic needle, began jabbing it toward Eiffe and said, "I have AIDS. I have AIDS," according to police reports.
Eiffe backed off, afraid for his life, but then tackled Flores with Bowman's help, handcuffed him and held him until police arrived, according to the reports.
The security officer told police that while handcuffing Flores, he may have been punctured by the needle. Police said he had a laceration to his left hand and was taken by ambulance to St. Joseph's Hospital, where he was tested for HIV.
Police said the results of the test will not be known for a few days. As a precaution, doctors started Eiffe on treatments to try to prevent any infection from HIV, police said.
Flores told officers he is a heroin addict and has AIDS and hepatitis C. He also was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital and was tested for HIV and hepatitis, police said.
Flores was charged with second-degree attempted assault, second-degree burglary, second-degree menacing, fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, petit larceny and possession of a hypodermic instrument.
