Shoplifter escapes patrol car, is recaptured www.privateofficer.com

ORANGE COUNTY FLA. - A man is under arrest after escaping Sunday from an Orange County sheriff's patrol car as it was pulling into the county jail.At 6:12 a.m., deputies responded to a shoplifting call at a 7-Eleven on Orange Blossom Trail near Piedmont Wekiva Road in Apopka. The suspect, Fabian Contreras, 27, ran into the woods when he saw deputies, but was caught a few minutes later. As the patrol car was taking Contreras to the jail, he persuaded the deputy to roll down the window because he was uncomfortable, sheriff's spokesman Jim Solomons said. The patrol car had bars on the windows
As the patrol car was pulling into the sally port at the jail, Contreras was able to slip one of his hands out of the handcuffs, reach through the bars, open the door and escape.A couple of dozen deputies, a dog and a helicopter searched for Contreras for about an hour in a small retention pond nearby. Deputies found Contreras in the water and arrested him.He was charged with theft of a can of beer, felony possession of cocaine and violation of probation.Solomons said the Sheriff's Office is looking into escape charges. Solomons said he does not know why the patrol- car door was unlocked.
