The police have arrested Nicholas Costa, 21, of 111 Parnell St., Mount Pleasant, and charged him in an alleged baseball bat attack on a security guard that left the guard critically injured.
Ronald L. Andrews, 28, of Cranston, is a patient at Rhode Island Hospital, suffering from several skull fractures and a broken jaw, Detective Capt. Hugh T. Clements Jr. said yesterday.
Costa, who has a criminal record, turned himself in to the police Monday night, and was held overnight in a cell at police headquarters until his arraignment yesterday in District Court on a charge of assault with a dangerous weapon.
Andrews, an employee of Professional Security Services, was working as a security guard at the private Civic Center Parking Garage, 165 Washington St., when he was injured between 2 a.m. and 2:30 a.m. Sunday, according to the police. Witnesses said two or three men in a black BMW were involved.
“The assault occurred as this vehicle was leaving the parking lot,” Clements said. “It was a dispute between the occupants of the vehicle and the parking lot attendant, and at some point a baseball bat was produced and one of the occupants violently struck the attendant, causing serious, serious head injuries.”
The police found the weapon, a blue aluminum baseball bat.
Clements credited Patrolman Jonathan Kantorski, who immediately recognized the license plate on the BMW that a witness reported to him, for making a quick arrest possible. Having concluded his shift for the Police Department, Kantorski was working early Sunday on a private security detail downtown. A report of a disturbance at the parking garage drew him to the scene, where he encountered a witness.
Clements said Kantorski knows the man who drives the BMW and the men who generally ride in it, one of whom allegedly is Costa.
