Police seize weapons, money, drugs, arrest security guard www.privateofficer.com

Scranton PA. March 25 2008 An arsenal of assault weapons was seized by police and with it a stash of thousands of dollars worth of drugs. Police said all of it was confiscated from a man who worked in security.

Authorities in Lackawanna County said they tracked Thomas Evanitsky, 31, of Scranton in a three-month sting which included video and audio surveillance and which led them to his home. There they found even more than they expected.Evanitsky is an Air Force veteran, a trained bounty hunter and is now charged with dealing drugs.

The arsenal of weapons and ammunition found at his home was too large to fit on the conference room table at the Lackawanna County district attorney's office. It included six semi-automatic weapons, nine handguns, gas masks, bullet-proof vests and thousands of rounds of bullets.Detectives said it all belonged to Evanitsky, and that they seized the contraband at his house on Hemlock Street in south Scranton last week."These weapons can be owned by people in the public. Even though they are assault weapons in nature, there really is no legitimate use for them except for target practice," explained District Attorney Andy Jarbola.

While the weapons on their own are not illegal what makes this against the law is that detectives said when searching Evanitsky's house, they found this three and a half ounces of cocaine plus marijuana, Percocet and Xanax.According to arrest papers, Evanitsky dealt drugs in the parking lot at the General Dynamics Ammunition plant on Cedar Avenue in Scranton. On Thursday, Evanitsky was arrested there.

He worked as a security guard for a subcontractor called Century Security. The company's director of operations said he is as shocked to hear about this as anyone. He said they do background checks and drug screening and that Thomas Evanitsky passed them both. With the drugs and guns off the street Lackawanna County authorities said they are now left to wonder what could have been."He was well equipped with gas masks.

It could have been a very serious situation here and that's one of the reasons why we have this out on display," Jarbola added.Evanitsky is in the Lackawanna County jail on $300,000 bail.
