COLLIER COUNTY FLA. March 26 2008 Two men were arrested Tuesday after they allegedly went on a shoplifting spree with a toddler in tow. As they tried to escape one of the suspects also punched a deputy and a store employee.
The crime took place at the Beall's department store on US 41 in East Naples.
According to deputies, Kelvin Shane Townsend, 30, filled a shopping cart with merchandise and pushed it near the exit.
He then allegedly took a black baseball cap out of the cart, pulled off the price tag, put the hat on and left the store
Authorities say Townsend returned to the store a few minutes later, this time holding his one-year-old daughter and accompanied 31-year-old Craig Marshall Daniels.
Townsend and Daniels reportedly went in separate directions and loaded several items into shopping carts.
Townsend pushed his cart near the front entrance and left the store with his daughter. They got into a white Dodge Durango and drove away. Deputies say Townsend returned a few minutes later and parked near the entrance.
Daniels pushed his shopping cart to the front entrance of the store. He allegedly grabbed all the merchandise and ran out of the store without paying.
Daniels was heading toward Townsend's Durango when he was confronted by the store's loss prevention officer.
That's when witnesses say Daniels turned around and punched the employee in the face.
Two Collier County Deputies then tried to restrain Daniels. He ended up punching a female deputy in the face, breaking her sunglasses.
Authorities were eventually able to subdue Daniels. He and Townsend were taken into custody. The toddler was turned over to her mother.
When deputies searched Daniels they found a narcotic pipe that contained methamphetamine residue.
He was charged with grand theft, battery on a law enforcement officer, resisting a merchant, battery, resisting arrest with violence, possession of narcotic paraphernalia and possession of methamphetamine.
Townsend was charged with grand theft and child neglect.
