Man gets prison term for running down security officer www.privateofficer.com

EASTON NJ March 23 2008 At one time Thomas Mosser III went to the Culinary Institute of America and became a chef for a cruise line.
That time was a bright spot in his life, which also includes a criminal record dating back to 1989 and a substantial history of drug and alcohol abuse, Northampton County President Judge Robert Freedberg said
This is a guy who has some potential in life," Freedberg said. "He's been taken down by drugs and alcohol, primarily drugs."
Freedberg sentenced the 37-year-old to 30 months to 10 years in state prison after he stole a car and nearly ran down a security guard.
Bethlehem police said Mosser was driving a vehicle stolen from Total Recon on July 15 in the 900 block of Orchard Street when he attempted to hit Peter Pavlovic, an employee of Westgate Mall security.
The 2000 Chevrolet S10 pickup truck had a license plate stolen from another vehicle at Total Recon and Mosser also stole keys to a 1998 Ford Escort.
Mosser was convicted of burglary, criminal trespass, simple assault, unauthorized use of automobile, fleeing or attempting to elude police, driving with a DUI-related suspended license and criminal attempt to commit bad checks.
"These were significant criminal acts he was involved in," Freedberg said.
Defense attorney James Connell said because of a previous state parole violation, Mosser faces a state sentence of 33 to 40 months. Freedberg ordered his sentence to be served consecutive to the state sentence.
Freedberg ordered Mosser to pay court costs and a $1,000 fine, undergo psychological and drug and alcohol evaluations, random drug screenings, have no contact with the victims and maintain a full-time job when released.
Mosser sent a letter written in red ink to Freedberg before his sentencing, asking to be sent to a state facility because it would offer better drug treatment programs.
Mosser, with a bushy beard and his shaggy hair slicked back, told the judge in court he's been sober for eight months.
"I've been fighting substance abuse addiction for the past two decades," Mosser said. "I would have been dead from that, if not for" being sent to prison.
Freedberg ordered Mosser be sent to a state facility as soon as possible.
