Identity theft suspect wanted for murder www.privateofficer.com

GALESBURG IL. March 26 2008 — When the FBI picked up Freddie Collins in Chicago for possession of a fake California driver’s license and fake Social Security card on March 3, they also found a suspect in a 2004 Galesburg shooting.

Collins, 36, whose fake identification listed him as “Gary Wilson Jr.,” is being held in the Knox County jail on $1 million bond for the Dec. 21, 2004, shooting of Jonas Ross III, then 24, in the parking lot of the former Wal-Mart on National Boulevard. Collins is awaiting a Monday hearing.

Police extradited Collins from Cook County to Knox County following his arrest. He has been listed as a suspect since early in the investigation, but had remained at large for nearly four years.

Ross was shot seven times during the incident for which Dante Hubbard was acquitted in 2006. Police said the shooting was retaliation for Ross robbing Collins.

Lucas Gustafson was sentenced in 2005 to 160 days in jail and 30 months of conditional discharge for reportedly driving the getaway car used by Collins and his nephew, Hubbard.

Collins faces charges of attempted first degree murder, aggravated battery with a firearm and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon. He is being held on a Knox County warrant.

The Galesburg Police Department wouldn’t comment on the case.
