A Madison man was charged Monday with first-degree reckless endangerment for allegedly trying to run down a Wal-Mart employee who was chasing his accomplice as she made off with a television set.
According to a criminal complaint, Michael W. Crawford, 54, reportedly told his accomplice, 18-year-old Patricia M. Rice of Stoughton, "If he could have hit her worse, he would have."
The victim suffered a large bruise on her leg from the impact.
The Feb. 15 incident happened at the Wal-Mart at 4198 Nekoosa Trail after Rice allegedly fled through a fire door with the $384 television set, setting off the fire alarm. The Wal-Mart employee chased Rice through the door and into the parking lot and Crawford allegedly hit the woman with the door of the car as Rice tried to get into the vehicle with the stolen TV.
Rice faces misdemeanor theft, misdemeanor bail jumping and a felony charge of driving a stolen vehicle, the latter charge for allegedly stealing her father's car the day she allegedly stole the $384 television, which she and Crawford allegedly sold on the street for $100. Crawford was also charged with misdemeanor theft.
Rice's father told police that Rice also stole her mother's 25th anniversary ring, valued at $2,500, from a drawer before taking the car, a Mercury Cougar valued at about $2,000, but the complaint did not charge her with that theft. The car was later recovered from a store parking lot on Madison's west side.
