A man Dalton Police had chased after he was wanted for shoplifting later crashed his vehicle at the Varnell/Tunnel Hill exit.
A man Dalton Police had chased after he was wanted for shoplifting later crashed his vehicle at the Varnell/Tunnel Hill exit.
Two passengers were killed, and he was airlifted in the Easter morning incident.The driver was identified as 34-year old Charles Shadwick.
The names of the two people killed have not yet been released.Dalton police had responded to a shoplifting report at K-Mart on Walnut Avenue.
All officers were advised to be on the lookout for the white male suspect and two other occupants in a burgundy Nissan Pathfinder. Within minutes, an officer spotted the suspect’s vehicle at the intersection of Shugart Road and Highway 41. The officer followed the suspect onto Highway 41, where he attempted to pull the vehicle over.
The suspect’s vehicle continued onto Interstate 75 heading north. Because the driver of the suspect’s vehicle was driving erratically, the Dalton officer terminated a chase and followed at a safe speed, Dalton Police said. Shortly after 10:30 a.m., the suspect’s vehicle got off the interstate at the Varnell/Tunnel Hill exit 341.
While trying to make a right turn at the exit, the suspect’s vehicle flipped and struck another vehicle and a concrete wall. The two people in the suspect’s vehicle were pronounced dead at the scene. Shadwick was airlifted to Erlanger Hospital, where he remains.
The occupants of the other vehicle were treated and released from Hamilton Medical Center in Dalton for minor injuries. Other agencies responding to the crash scene were the Georgia State Patrol, the Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office and Tunnel Hill Police.
