Corso Coffee at The Shops Buckhead Atlanta will make its last cappuccino tomorrow. The upscale Italian coffee shop and cafe which opened at the posh Buckhead development in late 2014 is closing at 6PM tomorrow, the result, I'm told, of a "disagreement with the landlord" [Oliver McMillan.]
Corso was the first of four concepts from New York-based restaurant group LDV Hospitality to open in the Shops Buckhead Atlanta project. Dolce Italian, the group's upscale Italian restaurant, opened in the project during the fall of 2015, followed by American Cut and rooftop sibling concept The Regent Cocktail Club this past fall.
ToNeTo Atlanta reported in 2014 that the build-out for the 1,592 square foot Corso space with prime visibility on Peachtree Road cost just north of a half million dollars.
Corso Coffee locations remain open in New York City and at Gurney's Montauk Resort & Seawater Spa in the Hamptons.
Creative Loafing contributing food writer Brad Kaplan referred to Corso as "the Ferrari of coffee shops" in a December 2014 article.
Corso marks the third restaurant closure, and at least the eighth closure overall, at The Shops Buckhead Atlanta development.
Charlotte, North Carolina-based Urbana Wellness Spa was seemingly the most recent closure, and possibly the shortest tenure at the center, having opened at the project late last May and closing in late September. The closure came without warning to customers according to at least one Yelp.com review.
ToNeTo Atlanta was supplied the following statement regarding Corso's closure:
"We can confirm that Corso will close on Tuesday — we wish them the best and respect their business decision. We are looking forward to welcoming another exciting concept in its place, which will be an exclusive new venture from Revelator Coffee Company. We will share details once they are finalized." - The Shops Buckhead Atlanta
The "exclusive new venture" will be called "The Mourning Dove"and will feature both food and alcohol, as well as coffee. Plans call for local design firm ai3 to assist in the re-design of the space and for the new venture to debut sometime in October.
Birmingham, Alabama-based Revelator Coffee Company operates two locations in Atlanta: at the Cottonwood Westside apartments (formerly Elan Westside) at 14th Street & Howell Mill Road and at Square on Fifth on Spring Street near 5th Street in midtown. Revelator is also expected to open a new coffee shop within the new Whole Foods Market in Chamblee that will open this Friday, August 18th.
In addition to the Revelator branded locations, the company also operates a number of Octane branded locations in metro Atlanta and Alabama following the company's acquisition of Octane this past March. Among the Octane locations in Atlanta is one in Buckhead at Atlanta Tech Village on Piedmont Road near Lenox Road, not far from The Shops Buckhead Atlanta.
Are you surprised that Corso is closing? Do you think Revelator is a good replacement at The Shops Buckhead Atlanta? Where is your favorite place to grab coffee in Atlanta?
