Security officer confronts armed man, saves 2 people by: Rick McCann www.privateofficer.com

Las Vegas NV. MARCH 21 2008

An apartment was evacuated Tuesday afternoon near Pennwood and Valley View during a stand off with an armed man where SWAT had been called out.
People inside the complex were forced to stay away from their homes during a standoff between Metro officers and a man with a gun.
Metro police say that a man had gotten into a confrontation and pulled a gun on the woman and her dauhter.
After a short stand off, police arrested Corey Matthews but say that an off duty security officer saved the lives of the woman and her daughter but responding to the confrontation and getting in the middle of Matthews and the woman that he was pointing a gun at.
Security Officer David Brown said, "I grabbed my shoulder holster and tried to get his attention off of her, and bring it to myself. "
It worked and the woman and daughter was able to escape to safety.
Now, eye to eye with Matthews, Brown ordered him several times to drop the weapon.
He would not.
"You could have opened fire on the guy. He was armed. Why did you not?" an officer asked Brown after it was all over and Matthews was in custody.
"Because of the kids being around. There were little kids out here playing around. For him to do that, that was one of the stupidest things to do," explained Brown.
Instead of pulling the trigger, police say Matthews took off and barricaded himself in a nearby apartment.
Heavily armed SWAT teams were called in as frightened residents were evacuated out of the area.
Martin Wright from Metro said, "We evacuated approximately twenty residents. They were sent to Clark High School."
About an hour and a half later, it was all over, and Brown was commended for possibly saving two lives.
Brown said, "You have got to be quick thinking and quick reacting. I just did not want anybody to get hurt."
Fortunately, nobody was hurt, including Matthews, bystanders, and police officers.
Right now, Matthews is being held in Clark County Detention Center.
Police have charged Matthews with three counts of assault with a deadly weapon.
It has not been determined what set Matthews off or if the security officer was a residence of the apartment complex or how he happened upon the scene but all agree that him being there made the difference in how the whole thing turned out.
