School employee admits to theft of over $306,000 by; Rick McCann www.privateofficer.com

Scottsdale AZ. March 21 2008
A Scottsdale-schools employee who denied in June when she was arrested after a lengthy police investigation that she had embezzled $306,000 from school funds to pay gambling debts has now pleaded guilty to the theft.

Authorities say that Janet Winkler Rice, 60, has now admitted that she did indeed steal funds from the school system and is expected to be sentenced May 27 in Maricopa County Superior Court.

Rice was arrested after Scottsdale detectives discovered "evidence of a destructive gambling habit" in her records. Investigators say Rice had embezzled about $306,000 since November 2005.

Rice could face more than twenty years in prison on the charges.

It was not known if she had an attorney in this matter.
