Police shoot, kill burglary suspect at mall www.privateofficer.com

The second level of the Pearlridge Mall parking lot turned into a crime scene.

Officers spotted a man breaking into a car, that's when the mall turned into a melee. "I was sitting at my desk and it was about 3:30 and I heard a really loud screech and I heard bang, bang, bang, bang, four shots right after each other so I ran out here and there were like 12 people and they all ran to the side of the building and I locked my door and told them to call the cops," said Michelle Miyata, witness.

Officers say the suspect tried to escape by dragging one officer, tried to run over another then rammed into an unmarked police car. That's when a fourth officer opened fire. "I knew they were gunshots I can tell the difference I've heard gunshots before compared to fireworks but I was like that gunshots and I went in the back and said I’m locking the front door," said Miyata. "The cops gave him a chance and he didn't listen so the ended up shooting him down," said Keone Cabacungan, witness.

The suspect died at the scene. Police say he was a 47 year old man with 18 prior convictions, two of which were felony auto theft. He was known to officers and police got a tip he was in the Pearlridge parking lot. That’s when they spotted him breaking into a car.

The Honolulu Police Chief believes his men used a reasonable amount of force. "For the suspect's situation it was unfortunate for him that we had two full crew units actually confronting him and trying to take him out," said Chief Boisse Correa, Honolulu Police Department.

Two officers were treated for minor injuries. The officer that fired the fatal shot is a 15 year veteran. He is on administrative leave. A full investigation is underway.
