Aurora CO. March 19 2008
A combination of DNA evidence and what Aurora police call a "thorough investigation" has led to the arrest of a security guard in the Jan. 23 murder of a woman at an East Colfax Avenue motel.
Arrested for the murder of Shirley Rose Welch, 55, was James W. Merritt, 43, who worked as a security guard at the King's Inn.
Workers at the motel found Welch's body in a room on the third floor after relatives of Welch were unable to reach her and determined she had not shown up for work. Welch was staying at the motel.
Investigators said that Welch suffered trauma to her upper body.
Persons who knew Welch said she often walked to the places she wanted to go.
Merritt, in addition to being a security guard at the King's Inn, also lived at the motel, 11800 E. Colfax Ave.
