MOUNTAIN CITY TN. March 24 2008— About 30 Johnson County tobacco farmers have lost the proceeds from last year’s crop, thanks to bad checks allegedly written by the owner of the Mountain City Tobacco Warehouse.
Sheriff Mike Reece said several arrest warrants have already been issued for Jesse Ray Faulkner II. He expects to eventually have about 30 arrest warrants on the Southern Pines, N.C., businessman. He said his department has already received complaints of bad checks totaling $418,837.
Reece said it takes time to issue a warrant. First, the victim must send a certified letter to Faulkner, demanding he make good on the check within 10 days. After that time has expired, the sheriff’s department can issue the arrest warrant.
Finding Faulkner might also take some time. Reece said he is working with North Carolina law enforcement officials, but they have not been able to locate Faulkner.
Even though Faulkner was operating in at least two states, Reece said there are no federal charges against him.
“This could be a long, drawn-out process,” Reece said. “I have tried to explain this to the victims, but they want their money.”
Reece said he understands the desperation of the farmers, some of whom are owed more than $25,000.
“Most of these people operate on credit. They go to the Co-op and charge for their fertilizer and supplies. They pay when they get their check,” Reece said.
Reece said that according to business licenses, Faulkner has operated the warehouse since August 2005. He said this is the first time there has been any problems.
The sheriff said there is nothing of value left inside the warehouse.
This was not the first problem in Faulkner’s business holdings this year.
On Feb. 10, the Liberty Warehouse in Wilson, N.C., burned to the ground. Faulkner was a joint owner of that warehouse, which had been used primarily as storage since its last tobacco sales in September 2004.
