LIVERMORE CA. March 23 2008- More than 80 people were arrested today at an annual Good Friday peace action outside Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, spokesman Don Johnston said.
However, Carl Anderson, a 57-year-old Oakland man affiliated with Tri-Valley Communities Against a Radioactive Environment, which has helped organize the protests for many years, put the number higher. He said he counted 91 people who were arrested.
Anderson said authorities placed 36 people, including himself, in one holding cage and 55 people in another cage.
Tri-Valley CARES executive director Marylia Kelley said in past years protesters who were arrested were only cited for infractions for blocking a public thoroughfare but this year at least some protesters were charged with misdemeanors and given dates to appear in court.
Anderson said he was charged with a misdemeanor.
Although the lab's federal security officers were involved in monitoring the demonstration, Johnston said the arrests were mostly made by the Alameda County Sheriff's Office, a few by security and he doesn't have specific information about the charges against the protesters.
Sheriff's spokesman Sgt. J.D. Nelson wasn't immediately available for comment.
Johnson said more than 300 people participated in today's protest.
Kelley said the protests have taken place every year for more than 25 years and target the lab because it's helped design every nuclear weapon in the United States' arsenal.
She said, The emphasis is on nonviolence and rejecting violence."
